It is rare for me to send a mass email, but I am so terribly concerned about the negative impact of the proposed high-speed rail (HSR) from London to Kitchener that I want to get the message out to as many people as I can.
I am deeply concerned that many citizens are unaware of the detrimental impact the proposed HSR will have on rural communities and agricultural land, as well as urban communities. Even if you think you may not be affected, as an Ontario taxpayer and consumer of commodities, you are. The ultimate price tag on this project is astronomical and when looked at closely, it doesn’t even make sense.
Although I do support improving passenger rail transportation in south western Ontario, I do not believe that the current Ontario government’s decision to introduce HSR between London and Kitchener is supported by any evidence to show that it makes financial, environmental or social sense. Disappointingly, the environmental assessment (which has already started) does not include the study of more viable alternatives and what is best for Ontarians.
What can we do about this?
I would encourage you to visit the InterCityRail website at www.intercityrail.org. InterCityRail is an organization comprised of various local groups that have joined together to promote evidence-based solutions for passenger rail transportation in south western Ontario. The website has a wealth of information on the proposed HSR and viable alternatives, as well suggestions on what we can do.
